The IRM-Tool project

www.innovationtool.fi is created as part of the Innovation Resource Moderating Tool (IRM-Tool) project. Novia University of Applied Sciences coordinates the project and works together with Åbo Akademi and the Turku University of Applied Sciences. Meyer Turku is a strategic partner.

In a nutshell

Implementation: 29.5.2017-31.12.2019.

Budget: 431 690 euro

Financing: European Social Fund

IRM-Tool boosts creative job opportunities in maritime industry by enabling encounters between the creative field and maritime industry. Innovationtool.fi supports facilitators and companies to develop their innovation capabilities and management.

The background of IRM-Tool lies in the innovation theory written by Professor Alf Rehn. In his article, innovation theory is applied to the context of maritime industry. During 2018, the IRM-Tool project applied the themes in co-creation workshops and multimedia production, for example by creating short films that tell stories about challenges in innovation processes. The scripts of the films were based on innovation theory and practical cases that were collected by interviewing maritime companies. The innovation tool is developed by applying service design, media expertise and other creative knowledge.

The innovation tool provides possibilities to learn independently and communicate together in order to develop innovation capabilities. Workshops organised in the project tested creative knowledge, methods and their application in concrete challenges of the maritime industry.

Project background

The idea for the project has its roots in the fact that creative skills are generally utilised either in the beginning of the innovation process or at the end of it, but not throughout the process. IRM-Tool explored these undiscovered opportunities of creative skills by using co-creation and service design.

Maritime meets Arts

One of the workshop series of IRM-Tool was the “Maritime meets Arts” process. The goal was to experiment how art can be used to develop the maritime field. The maritime industry introduced genuine challenges from the industry to artists participating in the process. Maritime companies were encouraged to identify the kind of challenges that would be best solved with arts. In addition, six chosen artists were assisted to gain information on the maritime field and its practices. During the process, artists went deeper into the challenges, solved the defined problems and introduced the resolutions in art concepts. In this process IRM-Tool worked together with Arts Promotion Centre Finland . The cooperation was a good example of how the strengths of different fields can formulate something unique.

IRM- Tool project organized workshops with various themes, tested different facilitation methods and gave insights to utilization of creative knowledge.

Project organisation

Novia University of Applied Sciences is the coordinator of the project and the initiator of the project idea. Novia has played the main role in developing the tool. Novia has also been responsible for organising and documenting the workshops, partly together with Turku University of Applied Sciences (TUAS). Novia and TUAS have been in charge of the service design and co-development in the project. TUAS has worked as an expert in producing short films, infographics, animations and web materials. Åbo Akademi has produced the innovation theory package and innovation stories that have provided topics and given inspiration throughout the project implementation.
